Short version: Simply Chords doesn't collect, store on a server, sell or share any personal data. Everything it does happens inside your own browser.
What the extension processes
- Audio of the video you're watching. On YouTube pages, the extension analyzes the sound of the playing video to work out its chords. The audio is processed in memory as it plays. It is never recorded, saved or sent anywhere.
- The video's ID. Used to remember the chords of songs you've analyzed, so they're ready next time.
- Your YouTube profile picture. Only used to draw your ship in the optional mini-game, on your screen. It isn't copied, stored or sent anywhere.
What's stored, and where
The extension uses Chrome's built-in extension storage on your device for:
- your settings (capo, easy shapes, overlay position and size, analysis speed, on/off);
- chord timelines of songs you've analyzed (chord names and times, up to 200 songs);
- the mini-game's high score and sound on/off choice.
If you're signed in to Chrome with sync turned on, Chrome may sync your settings between your devices through your Google account. Analyzed songs stay on the device. You can delete all analyzed songs with Clear analyzed songs in the extension's menu, and removing the extension deletes everything it stored.
What's never done
- No data is sent to the developer or any third party. The only thing the extension ever loads is your profile picture, from YouTube itself, when you open the mini-game.
- No analytics, tracking, advertising or cookies.
- No accounts and no sign-in.
- No browsing history is read; the extension only runs on youtube.com and music.youtube.com.
Permissions
- Storage: to save your settings and analyzed songs on your device.
- Access to youtube.com and music.youtube.com: to show the chord box on the video and analyze the video's sound.
